Fava beans are in season, and we have 8 1/2 pounds of them taking up a cubic foot in our refrigerator. The pods are enormous: 8 inches long and an inch wide. In addition to hogging precious fridge space, fava beans are high maintenance in that they require shelling and peeling to become edible. The whole process will be a first for me–hopefully it will be easier than it sounds.
I suspect that the bean yield will be significantly less than 8 1/2 pounds. For the record, my guess is that we’ll end up with 2 pounds of fava beans after they are shelled and peeled.
More to come!
